What "end-to-end encrypted" means here
Your notes are encrypted on your machine before they are sent. The server stores ciphertext it has no key for, so a breach of our database — or a demand made of us — yields nothing readable. Filenames and folder names are encrypted too.
The honest trade-off: if you forget your passphrase and lose your recovery key, nobody can recover those notes. Not you, not us. That is what makes the promise real, and your files stay on your disk regardless — Marknote is local-first whether or not you ever turn sync on.
